Speaking Words of Life

What have you been speaking about your life or the things around you? Are you speaking victory or defeat? Because the words that you are speaking have the power to impact your life in a negative or positive way. It’s important that we are intentional in the way we speak about ourselves or our situations because words have power.

Growing up I never knew this powerful truth and I would speak whatever I wanted about myself or my situations and sometimes they would be very negative because I was frustrated or angry. But after I learned about the power of our words from the Bible I became more intentional and careful with the way I spoke about myself or life in general.

In Genesis 1 we see how God created everything and it was through the words that He spoke. The power behind the words of God created the universe. There was a creative power or force in the words of God so from the very beginning we see the power and importance of our words. It is my heart’s desire that through this short article you would grasp the importance of speaking victoriously like a child of God and change your words about life.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21 NKJV.

The Bible is very clear about the power of our words and makes mention of it many times. Proverbs 18:21 shows us how a person’s life largely reflects the fruit of his/her tongue. As in to speak life is to speak God’s perspective on the issues of life and to speak death is to speak defeat or in other words taking the side of the enemy’s perspective about our life which is always the opposite of what God wants for our life. John 10:10 plainly speaks about the motive of the enemy which is to steal, kill and destroy our life but Jesus came to give us an abundant life and so whatever situation you may be facing right now, God’s will is for you to have victory. But the real question is are you speaking victory over it?

Sometimes we may be tempted to speak negatively about ourselves or our situations because we tend to make the same mistakes or we don’t see the results we expect but it is in those moments where we need to be very careful with our tongue to make sure that we don’t speak words of death or defeat but life and victory.

In my personal life there were many times I wanted to speak negatively because I was really frustrated about situations but in those moments I was reminded of the power of my words and so I chose to speak victory and life. As I spoke God’s perspective over my situation the heaviness lifted off and I felt faith rising up in me and so it’s true when the Bible says we will eat the fruits of our lips.

In Romans 10:17 we see that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, so as you speak God’s perspective over your situation your faith is building up on the inside. There is power in the Word of God !

The Bible tells us that we are sons and daughters of God. And that is our real identity but the enemy always tries to come against our identity of being a child of God by making us feel like we are not good enough because of our present struggles. But you are not your past nor present struggles because 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that we new creation and old things have passed away. You are a child of God and many times the enemy wants us to speak the complete opposite about ourselves then what God tells us about who we are. Especially when people deal with personal struggles they tend to speak harshly and negatively about themselves or remain silent and refuse to speak life over themselves. But in the midst of your struggle speak the truth of who you are – say it out loud “I am a child of God” and “I am the righteousness of God in Christ” . Begin to speak life and victory over the face of your struggles, addictions and self doubt. Don’t let defeat take over your tongue but you take authority and speak out the Word of God.

The book of James also plainly talks about the power of the tongue in chapter three, that blessing and cursing both proceed out of the tongue but that ought not be. Verse 6 tells us that the tongue is a little member of our body but it has the power to defile the entire body. Hence we need to be careful with the words we speak over ourselves and the situations around us. If you have been speaking the opposite of what God says then you can change your words today simply by making the choice to speak life and victory instead of death and defeat. It’s never too late to make changes in our life because we are all on a journey of growth, constantly learning and shifting decisions to become better and align with the will of God for our life. It is the will of God for you to live an abundant life because that’s your rightful portion as His child. Begin to live as a child of God by changing the way you speak !
